GRAND DESIGNS - showed the flexibility of the ICF system in building

The ICFA (Insulating Concrete Formwork Association) was delighted with the project on the Grand Designs program which showed the flexibility of the ICF system in building a unique curved structure. We agree with the designer and program presenter Kevin McCloud that ICF was probably the only way to build such a well insulated robust tightly curved house by the seaside in Devon.  That said, some aspects of the design and project requirements tested the capabilities of the system, leading to the application of technique not normally used in domestic buildings but now likely to become more refined and frequently used.

The learning curve gained on this project which started 18 months ago has been immense and we would urge clients who wish to build their own ‘ordinary’ or ’revolutionary’ homes to investigate this method alongside other low energy housing systems. There was a modest delay and cost overrun due to unforeseen difficulties with the construction, the structural design of which was only completed after project commencement.   This would have been much more significant had traditional methods been employed.   The much larger cost and time escalations on the project were nothing to do with the ICF system.
