The specification of sustainable ready-mixed concrete for Insulating Concrete Formwork (ICF) Systems from Bardon Concrete and London Concrete
Bardon Concrete and London Concrete, both Aggregate Industries businesses, have developed a number of sustainable ready-mixed concrete mixes for ICF applications. These are available in a variety of strengths and densities with the inclusion of cement replacements and recycled and secondary aggregates. These new mixes are marketed as U-crete under Aggregate Industries’ Emerald® brand.
Emerald® concrete has been specifically designed to fall in line with the demands of all BREEAM schemes including the Code for Sustainable Homes. Each mix design is made to fulfil the specification of the client, whether it is a simple statement of percentage of replacement materials or an elemental Green Guide rating. Depending on the requirements of the client, Bardon Concrete and London Concrete Emerald® mixes are available to meet both specification and budget.
Emerald® concrete can provide an external wall elemental rating of A+, depending on the internal and external finish to the wall and the thickness of the concrete core.
The Green Guide awards an ICF external wall element utilising Emerald® concrete an A rating for external walls in residential property, when built with 150mm thick ready-mixed concrete, insulated with expanded polystyrene to the required U value, an external thin coat polymer render, and internally plasterboard on dabs. The ICF system made with Emerald® concrete can be expected to offer exceptional standards of air-tightness.
Aggregate Industries is currently the only UK company certified at the ‘GOOD’ level within BES6001:2008 for The Responsible Sourcing of Construction Materials which on its own gives credits towards all BREEAM schemes including the Code for Sustainable Homes. All Bardon Concrete’s and London Concrete’s ready-mixed concrete is manufactured under the QSRMC quality assurance scheme and complies with EN206 BS8500.
